> architect’s office
We were asked by an architect’s office with five staff to implement a server based computer network supporting email, file, and printer sharing with remote access to files and emails.
The existing network was based on a peer-to-peer design using both PCs and Macs.
Solution
- Because of the use of both PCs and Macs we proposed a Linux based server solution rather than one based on a Microsoft or Mac server. The Linux solution is not as feature rich as the alternatives, but it fulfilled the relatively undemanding business requirements of the client.
- We provided a complete solution from carrying out the network cabling to configuring the Linux server and the individual PCs and Macs. We also arranged the internet access and the various email services required.
- The Linux server solution is scaleable and can therefore grow with the business. Linux software is continually developed by the open source software movement and updates are readily available.
- In addition, Linux software is free.
The client now has a reliable email service with industry standard spam and virus filtering.
Email can be accessed at home and on the move.
The server also stores the shared files used by all the staff.
If required these files can also be accessed at home or from a client’s office.
The server ensures that email and files are backed up regularly on to a separate disk.
