> pbx 999 calls: where’s the emergency?

It is self-evident that the provision of rapid and reliable location information to emergency first responders is beneficial to the person in distress. It is also obvious that delayed and misleading location information puts the person in distress at increased risk.

If the person in distress is unable to provide verbal confirmation of their location during a 999 emergency call then the first responder would have to rely on the location information that is automatically delivered by the workplace phone system (or PBX).

It is essential therefore that the regular risk assessments that organisations are required to undertake by Health & Safety legislation should consider the possibility that the workplace PBX could deliver misleading location information.

This is not a trivial issue since the latest generation of workplace PBXs (based on IP technology) have inherent design characteristics that cause significant problems for caller location identification.

These problems require careful consideration if an organisation is to meet the requirements of Health & Safety legislation and deploy solutions that would minimise the risk that their workplace PBX could deliver misleading location information to emergency first responders.

We believe that the 911-Enable Emergency Gateway is such a solution since it provides comprehensive location identification capabilities for all types of emergency calls routed via IP-PBXs.

The Emergency Gateway’s deployment by an organisation would therefore ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation.

The 911-Enable Emergency Gateway is North America’s market leading 911 location identification solution for PBXs and is certified by major PBX vendors such as Cisco, Avaya and Microsoft.

It has also been certified for routing 999 calls to BT’s 999 call handling service.

The Emergency Gateway is decribed in the brochure that can be downloaded from this link
