A VoIP hard phone is an integrated device that looks like a traditional phone, but is designed to connect directly to an ethernet socket rather than a standard phone socket.

A VoIP hard phone can therefore connect directly to a spare ethernet socket in a router or to an ethernet socket that is provided in an office via a Cat 5 or Cat 6 structured cabling system. VoIP hard phones often incorporate a second ethernet connection to enable a PC or laptop to share the same ethernet connection.

Most VoIP hard phones are designed to work on the SIP standard for VoIP communications that is used by most providers of public VoIP phone services. These can also connect to most VoIP PBXs.

However, there are some proprietary VoIP hard phones that can connect only to a particular vendor PBX. These enable VoIP PBX vendors to offer features that are not supported by the SIP standard.

There are also some VoIP hard phones that have a USB connection. These are designed to plug into a PC or laptop and require software running on the PC to function. They also require the PC or laptop to be switched on continually to be able to receive incoming calls.
