There are often occasions when the integrated wireless access point that is usually provided with a broadband router is not enough.
The problem is usually that the router’s wireless access point is not sufficiently powerful to provide the required coverage throughout a home or business premises.

This may be due to the fact that the router is located in an area that is enclosed and the enclosure is made of material that blocks wireless signals such as thick brick walls or metal. This is a particular problem for businesses where the router is installed in a metal structured cabling cabinet in the comms room.

In such cases it would be necessary to install a separate wireless access point at the required location within the premises. The access point would need an ethernet cable connection to the broadband router.

In larger premises such as a multi-floor office block or factory site it is likely to be necessary to install wireless access points in multiple strategic locations to provide the required coverage.

In situations where there is no ethernet socket to connect a wireless access point then an alternative would be either a HomePlug or Repeater solution.

There are many wireless access points available from prices as low as £30 to enterprise class models that cost several hundred pounds. Most wireless access points can also be configured as wireless range extenders.

We feature below 4 x wireless access points that can be purchased from Amazon. Just click on the product image for more information and the opportunity to buy. As with all Amazon products you can buy with confidence and in the knowledge that you are unlikely to find lower prices.

The wireless access point that we recommend is the Cisco WAP4410N. This is a powerful device with advanced security and configuration options. It also has Power Over Ethernet capability which is ideal if it has to be located in an area with no convenient mains socket.

It is also worth mentioning the Linksys WES610 as it is a dual band wireless access point which can operate on the less congested 5Ghz frequency as well as the more common 2.4Ghz frequency. This can be useful in areas where performance is affected by the presence of many overlapping wireless networks in the 2.4Ghz fequency band.

Amazon stocks many wireless access points which can be viewed by clicking here.
